Cheshire Cat Commission

 

A request was to paint a portrait of the Cheshire Cat from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland in this style.

I found some reference online.

 

Sketched it out and sent her a photo of it, too large to scan it was A1, and to see if she liked it so far. I had already told her before that it wouldn't come out exactly the same as my style is different, she said she knew and that she meant she wanted the colours, wispy parts, head same sort of thing.

So I got painting. Please ignore me in the pictures, my camera had stopped so I had to use my webcam on my laptop.

Finished and signed.

I looked around for a pose and did a quick sketch.

Quickly realised I needed reference for his hair so I found another shot.

 

First layer of paint for the skin and hoodie.

Since he has white hair I did the background carefully as it sticks out everywhere and I also started working out the small details; I fixed his jaw as before I made him too baby faced, teeth and eyebrows were tweaked as well.

Since I've finished university and my book, I'm searching for jobs now and here's some other paintings I've done to make sure I don't lose my touch.

This is The Twits written Roald Dahl, my take from the eyeball prank scene.
People I used for reference were Katie Champion and Mark Lee, Katie is an animtor and Mark is a technical illustrator.

This is from A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens and is my version of the second spirit, which is the Ghost of Christmas Present along with the two children; Ignorance and Want, that appear beneath his robes. My friend and technician posed for the ghost and my two friends Greg Hick and Jody Kmiotek were the children.

The Ugly Duckling crying because he has no friends and feels all alone and ugly. This is a clean up sketch, cross lined to show shading, and a quick mock up painting. I didn't really want a big detailed background at this point as I wanted to focus on the character.

Another painting but I wanted to see how it would look if I left the shading lines in.

Here is the final character painting of the duckling, I might go back and add a little more background, as in a few tufts of grass and mud and stones with a peek of sky so it won't look as bare.
